Mental health is that aspect of our
life which most of us tend to neglect. Mental health
includes our psychological, emotional, behavioural and social well-being. It is
a state of mind in which an individual realizes his or her own abilities, can
cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively, and is able to
make a contribution to his or her community.
In recent times people
are focusing more towards their growth, they are being more productive and are
building stairs to move progressively in this direction.
It’s not wrong to say that everyone enjoys success and wishes to climb up the
ladder through the norms of success that have been set within society however
this success brings a lot of pressure on our minds- pressure of more
productivity and to always stay on top of our game. What we fail to realize
here is that more pressure on our mind-set brings more stress and negativity.
Thoughts play a
significant role in our mental activity. They also produce feelings and these
can be both positive and negative in nature. Negative thoughts arise when we
fear something for example-fear of not performing up to mark or failure of what
might happen in the future; it manifest
in many ways. It is also observed that when we spend
more time overthinking, negative feelings or thoughts tend to follow with
it.
Therefore, it is very
important to deal properly with negative thoughts and
by dealing with it means bringing in positive thinking and flow of positive
thoughts. It is believed that a positive mind-set gives more confidence,
reduces hyper-tension and stress related disorders. Positive thinking also
helps people to see the best in themselves. It means viewing yourself and your
abilities in a positive light. Positive thinking does not mean ignoring
negative feelings it simply means to help individuals to pact with problems of
life in a correct or appropriate way.
One of the most
significant ways to build a positive mind-set is by self-care and self-love.
Self-care is the practice of taking an active role in protecting one’s own well-being
and happiness. It is often about disconnecting with the world – both physically
and virtually and putting your needs first. Sometimes we may feel guilty when we do things
for ourselves, but it is in-fact the most important thing to do. The best way
is to implement tiny self-care habits every day. To regularly include in your
life a little bit of love and attention for your own body, mind, and soul.
Self-control and self-care
often go hand in hand. Sometimes doing the best thing for your mental and
physical health could also mean saying no to certain things. This could mean
avoiding activities such as drinking alcohol or saying no to social engagements
etc. A good self-care routine can also help ease symptoms of depression and
anxiety. Even if you don’t generally have mental health issues, a lack of self-care
can result in these conditions manifesting.
Whilst a lot of
self-care is individual it is important to be open to seeking professional help
when needed. Dedicating time to speaking about your issues, or attending
courses like CBT, is important for your wellbeing, if you feel it’s necessary.
Some of the few self-care tips through which an
individual can take care of themselves and also achieve a positive mind-set are:
- · Stop self-negative talk
- · Laugh more
- · Start your day with positive affirmations
- · Spend time with
your family and friends
- · Have a healthy,
nutritious diet
- · Maintain a journal daily
- · Stay away from toxic people
- ·
Exercise or practice meditation
- ·
Take time away from work
- · And most importantly, focus on your present
Through these actions
one can transform their negative mind-set into a more positive one. Positive thinking impacts mental health in a good manner. If our mental health is in
a peaceful state we can be more efficient without taking unnecessary stress;
can cheer people around us and we can also look towards the brighter side of
our lives. Therefore, mental health and positive thinking goes hand in hand. If
one is balanced then other will automatically follow it. That is why it is
rightly said that “mind-set is
everything”.
